First Decision: Drop Height and Scale
Pendant lighting is geometry before it's anything else. A beautiful fixture hung at the wrong height reads as a mistake the moment someone walks in.

The rule that saves you: the light source must stay out of a seated person's eye line, and the fixture should scale to the furniture, roughly one-third to one-half the width of the surface it lights. Two small pendants over a long table usually beat one big one, because they spread the light instead of dumping it in the middle.
Glare Is a Shade Problem
Decorative fixtures are the worst offenders for glare, because the bare LED is often the design. The fix is the shade, the diffuser, or the baffle.
For hospitality you want a unified glare rating (UGR) below 19. For a lounge or restaurant where people sit for hours, push below 16. If the supplier can't quote UGR, that's your signal to spec an opal glass, a deep shade, or an internal baffle yourself. A fixture with no glare control will make every guest squint, and squinting guests don't linger or come back.
The Driver Nobody Sees
Inside every decorative pendant there's a driver, and it's the part most likely to fail. Here's why: the body is small and sealed, so the driver runs hot with no airflow, and the cheaper the fixture, the more likely the driver is glued in place with no service path.
- Replaceable driver. If the driver can't be swapped, the whole fixture is disposable. Ask before you quote.
- Rated for the heat. Confirm the driver's rated ambient temperature matches where it'll live inside the fixture.
- Known brand. Ask for the driver make and model. A no-name $3 driver inside a $120 pendant is the failure you'll fund later.
- Dimming. If the space dims, match the driver to the control. DALI or 0-10V for commercial, TRIAC for residential retrofits.

Color and Finish for Decorative Work
Decorative lighting lives or dies on color rendering. Warm materials, skin tones, and food all need a light source that doesn't flatten them.
Spec CRI 90 or higher with R9 above 50 for any space where people are the subject. For CCT, keep 2700K to 3000K for restaurants, lobbies, and homes, and 3000K to 3500K for modern retail and workspaces. Then match the CCT across every fixture in the room. A 2700K pendant hanging next to a 4000K downlight makes a space look unfinished, no matter how expensive the pendant was.
