The Cutout Comes First, Everything Else Is Negotiable
We watched a contractor install 240 downlights in a hotel corridor, then pull half of them back out. The spec sheet listed a 95mm cutout. The trim ring measured 90mm across the flange. The holes were cut to the sheet, not to the ring, and the trim left a visible gap against the plaster. Forty-three fixtures had to be re-cut, patched, and repainted.
Here's the thing about downlights: they look interchangeable in a catalog, but the mechanical fit is specific to the manufacturer. The cutout diameter is the one number that cannot be fixed after the ceiling is up. Lock it down first.
Standard cutouts cluster around 65-75mm for a 3-inch fixture, 90-110mm for 4-inch, and 150-175mm for 6-inch. But those are clusters, not standards. Two brands both selling a 6-inch downlight will differ by 5mm on the cutout. The trim overlaps the hole by only 10-15mm, so 5mm is the difference between clean and gapped.
IC vs Non-IC: The Insulation Question That Burns Projects
IC means Insulation Contact. An IC-rated housing is listed to sit directly against thermal insulation. A non-IC housing needs clearance, usually 75mm on every side. Get this wrong above an insulated attic and the driver overheats, the fixture cycles off, and the homeowner or tenant calls you back. In the worst case the insulation scorches.

The price difference is a few dollars a unit. The callback from a tripped thermal protector is a service truck, a drywall patch, and a client who questions every fixture you ever sold them. If the ceiling has insulation, buy IC-rated. End of decision.
CRI and CCT by Space
Color rendering is where buyers either look smart or look cheap. Put CRI 80 downlights in a clothing store and the reds go flat, customers misjudge fabric color, and returns climb. Put CRI 95 in a warehouse aisle and you spent money on nothing.

Always demand R9 alongside Ra. A fixture can score CRI 90 with an R9 of 20, and then reds still look gray. For retail and hospitality, write R9 ≥50 into the RFQ. It is the cheapest insurance against a disappointed client.
Dimming Is the Retrofit Trap
Most flicker complaints we hear trace back to a phase-cut dimmer paired with the wrong driver. If the space already has TRIAC or ELV dimmers, you have to specify a driver rated for that exact dimmer type, then test the pair on a bench before ordering. Forward-phase dimmers driving an ELV-only driver flicker at low levels. That is the whole mystery, every time.
For new commercial builds with a control system, 0-10V is the workhorse and DALI-2 buys per-fixture addressing. Fixed-output downlights are fine for back-of-house. The rule is simple: one bench test of the dimmer-driver pair saves a floor full of complaints.
Driver and Thermal: What Decides Lifetime
The LED chip is rarely the thing that dies. The driver is. Open the driver compartment on a sample and read the capacitor brand. A tier-one electrolytic (Rubycon, Nichicon, Panasonic) is the difference between a five-year fixture and a one-year one. Unbranded capacitors are the number one cause of early driver failure we see in the field.
Then check the thermal path. Run the sample at full output for eight hours and measure the heatsink. Over 70°C and the thermal design is undersized, which means the LM-80 lifetime projection goes out the window. A warm fixture is fine. A too-hot-to-hold fixture is a warranty claim waiting.
