|---|---|---|---|---|
| 95–100 | Exceptional | $0.15–0.40/W | Surgical lighting (IEC 60601-2-41), museum conservation (CIE 157:2004), color-matching booths (ISO 3664) | IEC 60601-2-41: Ra≥95 (surgical) |

Standard CRI (Ra) averages only R1–R8 — eight pastel test color samples. R9 (saturated red) is excluded from Ra but is the most critical extended index for procurement:
| R9 Value | Rating | Visual Effect | Required By |
|---|---|---|---|
| R9≥90 | Exceptional | Vivid reds; natural skin tones; food looks fresh | Museum-grade, premium hospitality |
| R9≥50 | Good | Acceptable red rendering; skin tones warm | ENERGY STAR Lamps V2.1 (mandatory) |
| R9≥0 | Minimum | No magenta distortion; reds slightly dull | DLC Standard V5.1 |
| R9<0 | Poor | Obvious magenta/green shift; skin looks unnatural | Not acceptable for interior lighting |
IES TM-30-18 addresses CRI's two major limitations: (1) Ra averages only 8 pastels, ignoring saturation; (2) Ra can't detect color preference or gamut. TM-30 uses 99 color evaluation samples (CES) and produces two indices:
| Metric | Standard | Samples | What It Measures | Procurement Use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| CRI (Ra) | CIE 13.3 | 8 (R1–R8 pastel) | Color fidelity (average) | Industry default; required by ENERGY STAR, DLC, Title 24 |
| Rf (Fidelity) | IES TM-30-18 | 99 CES | Color fidelity (comprehensive) | Preferred for critical applications; Rf≥90 ≈ CRI≥90 |
| Rg (Gamut) | IES TM-30-18 | 99 CES | Color saturation (100 = natural) | Rg>100 = more vivid; Rg<100 = muted. Retail: Rg 100–110 |
| Application | Min CRI (Ra) | Recommended R9 | Relevant Standard |
|---|---|---|---|
| Museum conservation | ≥95 | ≥90 | CIE 157:2004 |
| Surgical lighting | ≥95 | ≥90 | IEC 60601-2-41 |
| Art gallery | ≥95 | ≥90 | IES RP-30 |
| High-end retail (fashion) | ≥90 | ≥50 | IES RP-2 |
| Hospitality (hotel guest room) | ≥90 | ≥50 | — |
| Supermarket (fresh food) | ≥90 | ≥50 | — |
| Healthcare (examination) | ≥90 | ≥50 | IES RP-29 |
| Office (general) | ≥80 | ≥0 | EN 12464-1, IES RP-1 |
| School / classroom | ≥80 | ≥0 | EN 12464-1 |
| Industrial warehouse | ≥70 | — | EN 12464-1 |
| Parking garage | ≥70 | — | IES RP-20 |
| Street / roadway | ≥70 | — | IES RP-8 |
For procurement professionals, understanding CRI measurement methodology helps detect inflated claims:
| Program | Min CRI | Additional Requirements | Effective Date |
|---|---|---|---|
| DLC Standard V5.1 | ≥80 | R9≥0 for indoor; efficacy minimum varies by category | July 2021 |
| DLC Premium V5.1 | ≥90 (select categories) | R9≥50; higher efficacy thresholds | July 2021 |
| ENERGY STAR Lamps V2.1 | ≥80 | R9>0; CCT within 7-step MacAdam ellipse | January 2017 |
| Title 24 (California) JA8 | ≥90 | R9≥50; dimming to 10%; flicker <30% | January 2020 |
| Title 20 (California) | ≥82 | R9≥0; power factor ≥0.7 | January 2018 |
| EU Ecodesign (EU 2019/2020) | ≥80 | No specific R9; efficacy class A–G labeling | September 2021 |
Higher CRI LED chips cost more due to advanced phosphor formulations (e.g., Seoul Semiconductor SunLike, Bridgelux Thrive, Nichia Optisolis). The cost premium is primarily in the LED chip, not the fixture:
| CRI Target | Typical Phosphor Technology | Chip Cost Premium vs CRI 80 | Payback Period (Office 3000h/yr) |
|---|---|---|---|
| CRI 80 | Standard YAG:Ce phosphor | Baseline | Baseline |
| CRI 90 | Broadband red phosphor (nitride/silicate) | +10–20% | Neutral (efficacy similar to CRI 80) |
| CRI 95 | Multi-phosphor blend or violet-pump | +30–80% | 2–5 years (efficacy 10–20% lower) |
| CRI 98 (SunLike) | Violet-pump + tri-phosphor (no blue peak) | +80–150% | 5–8 years (color quality value proposition) |
