A MacAdam ellipse defines the region on the CIE 1931 chromaticity diagram where a human observer cannot distinguish color differences. For procurement, this matters because two "3000K" LEDs from different batches can appear noticeably different if their chromaticity falls in different ellipse steps:

Duv (delta u,v) quantifies how far a light source's chromaticity is from the Planckian locus — essentially its green/magenta tint. Two 3000K LEDs can look completely different if one has Duv=+0.003 (greenish) and another Duv=−0.003 (pinkish).
