Museum Lighting Design Principles

Accent-to-ambient ratio: Maintain 5:1 to 10:1 ratio between artwork illumination and ambient gallery lighting. This creates visual hierarchy — the art glows while visitors navigate comfortably. Ambient should be 30-50 lux, artwork at 150-200 lux.

Beam precision: Light the artwork, not the frame, wall, or floor. A 20-degree beam at 3m mounting height creates a ~1.2m diameter pool — ideal for medium paintings. Use framing projectors or snoots for irregularly shaped objects. Spill light on walls is visual noise.

Glare elimination: Position track so that the light source is never in the visitor's direct line of sight. Standard rule: track mounted 1-1.5m from wall, fixtures aimed at 30-degree angle from vertical. This keeps the luminous opening above the visitor's field of view.

Lux-hour budgeting: For light-sensitive artifacts, calculate annual lux-hours (illuminance × hours illuminated per year). Watercolor: 50 lux × 2,000 hours = 100,000 lux-hours (at exposure limit). Museum-Grade LED Supplier Requirements

1. Spectral power distribution (SPD) report required. Demand an SPD graph from 380-780nm. Museum-grade LEDs must show smooth spectrum without spikes or gaps, especially in the R9 (red) and R12 (blue) regions. Generic high-CRI LEDs often cheat by boosting specific wavelengths — the SPD reveals this.

2. UV/IR measurement data. Request UV output measurement (<10 microwatts/lumen) and IR measurement. This must come from a calibrated spectroradiometer (not a generic lux meter). Conservation departments will reject fixtures without this data.

3. Flicker-free dimming. Museums demand 0.1% dimming with zero flicker (flicker percentage <1% at all dimming levels). PWM dimming below 1kHz is unacceptable — it creates invisible flicker that causes visitor fatigue. DALI or DMX control with high-frequency PWM (>25kHz).

4. Color consistency over time. Request LM-80 data showing color shift (delta u'v') over 6,000-10,000 hours. Museum fixtures must maintain <0.003 delta u'v' for consistent exhibition appearance across years — re-aiming after color drift is disruptive and expensive.
