The Facade That Looked Like a Dotted Line
A developer specced a 60-meter LED wall wash for a new hotel. The render showed a smooth curtain of light. The reality, the night after handover, was a row of distinct bright dots marching up the brickwork. The client refused to pay the final invoice.
The fixture wasn't broken. It was wrong. The LED pitch was too wide, the optic didn't diffuse, and the mounting distance put the beam's overlap on the wrong side of the wall. Every one of those decisions looked fine on the spec sheet and failed the moment it hit real stone.
Grazing, Washing, Flooding: The Beam Angle Decision
Wall lighting isn't one thing. It's three different jobs that need three different beam angles.

Here's the rule that saves you: pick the fixture whose beam height covers your wall height at your mounting distance. Don't pick the angle the supplier happens to stock. If the wall is 8 meters and your fixture throws 6, you get a dark band at the top and a complaint in your inbox.
Hot Spots Are a Pitch Problem, Not a Quality Problem
When you can count the individual LEDs on the wall, you're looking at LED pitch, the gap between one diode and the next. Wide pitch means the beams don't overlap before they hit the surface.
For a continuous line of light you want 20 to 40 millimeter pitch, an opal or frosted diffuser, and enough distance from the wall for the beam to blend. A strip with 60 millimeter pitch will read as a dotted line on a facade every time, no matter how premium the driver is. If the budget forces wider pitch, hide the fixture in a cove where the eye can't resolve the dots.
Long Runs and the Power Injection Problem
Facade runs are long, and long runs pull current. Push a 50-meter linear run off a single feed and the far end glows dim and pink because voltage drops along the length. The fix isn't a bigger power supply at one end. It's power injection, tapping the run every 10 to 15 meters, and splitting it into segments that each carry a sane current.
Constant-voltage strips are forgiving but drop voltage fast. Constant-current fixtures hold brightness but cost more and need matched drivers. Decide this before you quote, because it changes the wiring, the driver count, and the install labor.
Outdoor Survival: IP, Driver, and Surge
A facade fixture lives outside for years. The three things that kill it are water, heat, and lightning.
Water: IP65 minimum, IP66 or IP67 if it sits low where pressure washing or pooled water reach it. The driver needs the same rating or its own sealed remote box. Heat: an LED sealed tight against water also traps heat, so check the fixture has a thermal path, not just a waterproof housing. Lightning: a surge protection device rated 4 to 10 kV for the local storm environment is cheap insurance against one storm killing the entire run.
Coastal air is a different animal. Salt attacks aluminum and stainless screws. If the project is near the sea, demand marine-grade coating and 316 stainless hardware, and accept that the finish will still dull faster than an inland install.
Control: When the Facade Has to Move
Static wash needs nothing more than a switch or a photocell. But if the client wants color, chasing, or a facade that reacts to events, the control protocol matters more than the lumens.
- 0-10V dims only. Fine for a static white wash.
- DALI addresses each fixture individually. Good for zoning a large facade.
- DMX512 gives per-fixture color and dynamic effects. The standard for architectural RGB.
Match the protocol to the ambition. Spec DMX on a static white facade and you're paying for a concert rig you'll never use. Spec 0-10V on a color-changing facade and you've locked the client out of the effect they bought.
