Water Finds a Way
An underwater light has exactly one job that matters more than light output: keeping the water out. The LED inside will run for 50,000 hours. The gasket, the cable gland, and the lens seal are what decide whether it gets to.
Here's the thing about IP ratings. A fixture stamped IP68 sounds sealed, but IP68 only means "protected against continuous immersion" at whatever depth and duration the manufacturer tested. One supplier's IP68 is 1 meter for 30 minutes. Another's is 3 meters continuous. Same two digits, completely different product.
IP68 Is a Starting Point, Not a Spec
When you spec an underwater fixture, make the supplier name the test conditions. "IP68" without a depth and a duration is like quoting a price without a currency. For a permanently submerged pool light, you want IP68 at a stated depth that covers the install, plus an IP68-rated cable gland, because the gland is where the water actually gets in.
Then look past the rating at how the seal is built. Fully potted drivers and a double-gasket lens are what separate a fixture that lasts a decade from one that fogs up in the first season. A cheap fixture cuts the sealing budget before it cuts the LED budget, because the failure shows up months later, after the invoice is forgotten.
The 12V Safety Question
Water and line voltage don't mix, and the code knows it. In the US, NEC Article 680 requires low-voltage pool lighting, typically 12V, run through an isolating transformer with GFCI protection. That's not a nice-to-have. It's the difference between a flickering light and a fatality.
So the fixture should be listed to UL 676 or equivalent, the transformer rated for the full load and mounted where it can't get wet, and the GFCI tested before anyone swims. When you buy fixtures in bulk for a resort or a municipal pool, the safety layer is part of the spec, not an afterthought the installer handles later.

The niche type drives the whole install. A wet niche means the fixture body itself is the water barrier, so the housing and cord matter more. A dry niche means the lens is the barrier and the body can be lighter. Spec the wrong niche for the application and you've built in a service headache from day one.
Housing and Lens: Where the Money Goes
The housing eats the corrosion, so for permanent submersion you want 316 marine-grade stainless steel or bronze. Polymer works in fresh water, but check the chlorine and UV ratings. Then the lens. Tempered glass resists scratching and UV; polycarbonate takes impact but clouds over years in chlorinated water. Budget fixtures cheap out on the lens first, because it's the part you can't see through until it's already going.
