Height Decides Everything Else
We've watched buyers spec a high-mast system by lumens-per-watt and then wonder why half the field is dark. Here's the thing about high mast: at 25 to 40 meters, light falls off with the square of distance, and the beam has to travel a long way before it lands. A fixture that looks fine at a 6-meter parking lot becomes useless 30 meters up unless its optics are built for that exact throw.
Mounting height sets the constraint, then optics and lumen package follow. A 15-meter recreational pole and a 40-meter stadium mast are two different products wearing the same name. Start with the pole, not the fixture.
Lux Levels by Competition Class
EN 12193 is the reference for sports lighting in most of the world. It splits venues into classes, and each class has a horizontal and a vertical lux requirement. Here's the rough map:

The vertical number is the one amateurs ignore. Cameras don't care how bright the grass is. They care how bright the players' faces are, and that's vertical lux. Buy to horizontal alone and you'll be paying for a retrofit when the broadcast truck shows up.
Optics: The Photometric File Is the Contract
A high-mast fixture's beam is defined by IESNA distribution types, Type I through Type V, plus the beam angle in degrees. Wide floods look bright up close and wash out at distance. Narrow and asymmetric beams put light where the field is and keep it off the neighbours' windows.
Demand the IES or LDT photometric file, and demand a point-by-point simulation in Dialux or AGi32 run against your actual pole layout. A supplier that can't produce a photometric file isn't a lighting manufacturer. They're reselling a box.
Glare: The Rating You'll Feel but Never See on the Quote
Glare on a sports field is measured as a glare rating, or GR, with lower being better. A floodlight aimed badly can make a football keeper lose a cross and make every neighbour file a complaint at once. Spec a GR target and a spill-light limit at the property line, and check the shield and visor options. The fixture's optical control, not its brightness, is what keeps you legal.
The Survival Specs
Outdoor high-mast fixtures sit in wind, rain, salt, and lightning. Three specs separate the ones that last from the ones that die on the mast:
- IP66 optical chamber. Water ingress is a slow killer. IP65 is the minimum people accept and IP66 is what you should demand.
- IK08 impact rating. Vandalism, hail, and stray balls all land on a high-mast head.
- 10kV surge protection. A mast is a lightning rod. A driver without surge protection is a driver that dies in the first storm.
Add to that the wind load, expressed as effective projected area, or EPA. The pole and foundation are engineered to a wind rating, and a heavier, bulkier fixture can push the whole assembly past its design limit. Confirm the fixture's EPA against the pole spec before you sign.
Driver, Chip, and Lifetime Math
Drivers cause the majority of field failures, so spec a branded unit from Mean Well or Inventronics and check the case temperature rating. On the chip side, CRI matters more than people think: broadcast and professional venues want CRI 90, while recreational fields can live with CRI 70 to 80. And get the L70 lifetime stated at a real case temperature, 85 degrees C, backed by TM-21 projection. A 100,000-hour claim with no stated temperature is a sales pitch, not engineering.
