Walk through any trade show's horticulture aisle and you'll see it: rows of fixtures glowing purple, with "1000W" and "FULL SPECTRUM" printed on the box. Here's the thing about that purple. It used to mean something, back when red and blue diodes were the only LEDs efficient enough to grow a plant without tripping a breaker. That was fifteen years ago.
Today's white LEDs are more efficient than those old red-blue boards, and they make better plants. But the purple look still sells, because buyers anchor on what they can see. A fixture that looks "grow-y" reads as legitimate. It isn't.
The Three Numbers That Actually Matter
PPF, photosynthetic photon flux, is total usable light. It's measured in micromoles per second (µmol/s), and it's the number that replaces wattage. Two fixtures can both draw 100W from the wall and differ by a factor of two in PPF, because one uses efficient white diodes and a good driver and the other doesn't.
PPE, photosynthetic photon efficacy, is how efficiently the fixture makes that light. Measured in µmol/J. This is where the electricity bill lives. A fixture at 1.2 µmol/J needs nearly twice the power of a fixture at 2.4 µmol/J to light the same canopy. Over a 50,000-hour life, that gap is real money.
Spectrum is what wavelengths, and in what ratio. Not "full spectrum" as a label on the box, but an actual spectral power distribution chart. Broad white with a red boost is the current sweet spot. It penetrates the canopy, keeps plants compact instead of leggy, and lets you actually see the leaf color when you're scouting for problems.

Notice the pattern. The best fixtures aren't the most expensive per unit, they're the cheapest per micromole. A buyer who does the math per µmol/J almost always ends up paying more up front and less every month after.
How a Buyer Exposes a Weak Fixture
You can't test a grow light at your desk, but you can make the supplier prove theirs. Ask for three things. First, an independent test report, UL or SGS or equivalent, with the fixture's exact model number on it. Second, a DLC Horticultural listing, which means a third party already checked the photometrics and the safety. Third, a PPFD coverage map at a stated height, so you see the uniformity across the canopy instead of a single hot-spot number.
A supplier who can hand you all three is competing on data. A supplier who starts talking about "full spectrum" and "plant magic" is competing on your ignorance. The difference shows up in the harvest.
