A Light That Can't Start a Fire
Here's the misconception that gets people hurt: "explosion-proof" sounds like the fixture can survive an explosion. It can't, and it isn't meant to. The term means the fixture is built so it cannot be the thing that starts one.
There are two ways to get there. Either the housing is strong enough to contain an internal ignition, so a spark inside the lens burns out against the metal and never reaches the flammable gas outside. That's flameproof, marked Ex d. Or the design removes the ignition sources, so there's no spark to contain in the first place. That's increased safety, Ex e. Both work. Neither is a normal fixture with a stronger bracket.
Zones, Groups, and the Temperature Class
Before you spec a fixture, you need to know what you're lighting. Hazardous areas are classified by how often an explosive atmosphere is present. Zone 0 is the worst: gas present continuously or for long periods. Zone 1 is occasional during normal operation. Zone 2 is only under abnormal conditions. Dust has its own scale, Zones 20, 21, and 22.
Then comes the gas group, which ranks how easily the gas ignites. Group IIA is the easy stuff like propane. IIB is ethylene. IIC is hydrogen and acetylene, the ones that light from a feather's touch. A fixture rated for IIC covers IIA and IIB below it, but not the reverse.
And the temperature class, T1 through T6, caps how hot the fixture's surface can get. T6 means the surface stays below 85°C, which is what you need around low-ignition-temperature gases. The class has to be low enough that the hottest spot on the fixture can't ignite whatever is in the air.

Notice the same physical space can get different answers depending on whether you're reading IEC zones or North American Class/Division. A buyer who specs "explosion-proof" without naming the zone is leaving the most important decision to whoever quotes cheapest.
ATEX and IECEx: Two Stamps, One Question
ATEX is the EU framework, mandatory for equipment sold into Europe. It ends in a CE mark plus a notified-body certificate number. IECEx is the international system, dominant in the Middle East, Asia, Australia, and increasingly accepted in North America. Many project specs now list both.
The certificate number is the part that matters, because that's what you can verify. A nameplate stamp is cheap to fake and impossible to check by eye. The number, looked up in the issuing body's public directory, tells you the certificate is real, what it actually covers, and whether it's still valid. Cross-check it against the nameplate's Ex code and temperature class. A mismatch there is the single most common tell of a fixture that was either faked or mislabeled at the factory.
