Color and CRI: Don't Overpay for What You Don't Need

A canopy light sits on a steel frame under a tall pole, which makes it a lightning target and a wind-load test. Three specs decide longevity:

- IK08 impact rating. Hail, debris, and the occasional thrown object.
- 6kV surge protection minimum, 10kV in lightning-prone regions. A canopy frame is a conductor.
On certifications, North America wants a UL wet-location listing under UL 1598 plus DLC Premium for rebates. Europe wants CE under the LVD and EN 60598.
Driver, Chip, and the 24/7 Problem
Canopy lights don't get a break. They run around the clock, which means a driver with a poor thermal path cooks itself inside the enclosed head. Drivers cause most field failures, so spec a branded unit from Mean Well or Inventronics and check the case temperature rating. On lifetime, get the L70 figure stated at a real case temperature, 85 degrees C, backed by TM-21. The fixture that's cheapest on the quote is usually the one that goes dark the week after the first storm.
