The Carton of Bulbs That All Came Back
A hardware distributor bought 5,000 LED bulbs for a Canadian retail chain. Good price, good brand, sold out in a month. Then the returns started, and within a quarter, nearly 800 bulbs came back. Every one of them was the same defect: the base was E27, threaded for a 240-volt European socket, and they were installed in E26 fixtures on a 120-volt grid.
The bulbs weren't faulty. The spec was wrong. Nobody checked the base against the destination market before the order, and a single overlooked letter turned a profitable run into a recall.
Base Type Comes First
Before lumens or color, the base has to fit the socket and match the voltage. This is the error that's cheapest to fix in the spec and most expensive to fix in a warehouse.

E26 and E27 look interchangeable and some bulbs do thread into both, but the voltage is the trap. An E26 bulb on a 240-volt circuit blows instantly; an E27 bulb on 120 volts glows dim and confuses the customer. Match the base to the market you're shipping into, and put the voltage on the carton label in both English and the destination language.
Buy Lumens, Not Watts
The wattage-equivalent label is a translation aid from the incandescent era, and it's slipping. Two bulbs both stamped "60W equivalent" can differ by 15 percent in real light output because the label is a marketing claim, not a measurement.
Lumens are the measurement. A 60W incandescent is about 800 lumens, and a modern LED produces that with 8 to 9 watts. Here's the conversion that matters:
- 450 lumens = 40W equivalent (accent, nightstand)
- 800 lumens = 60W equivalent (living room, bedroom)
- 1,100 lumens = 75W equivalent (kitchen, workspace)
- 1,600 lumens = 100W equivalent (large rooms, garages)
Efficacy Separates a Bulb From a Bargain
Efficacy is lumens per watt, and it's the number that tells you whether you're buying light or buying heat. A current mainstream bulb runs 100 to 130 lm/W. Below 80 lm/W is old stock or a low-bid driver, and above 130 lm/W is premium silicon. We've tested bulbs that advertised 100 lm/W and measured 72 lm/W because the driver was derated to cut cost.
For a commercial buyer running a thousand bulbs, the difference between 80 and 110 lm/W is real money. At 10 hours a day, the higher-efficacy bulb pays back its premium in energy in under a year, and it runs cooler, which is the single biggest lever on lifespan.
CRI and CCT: The Color That Brings It Back
A bulb can be bright and efficient and still get returned because the color is wrong. CCT is the color temperature: 2700K is warm and residential, 3000K is soft white, 4000K is neutral, and 5000K is daylight. CRI is how accurately the bulb renders color, and it's where cheap bulbs quietly fail.
- CRI 80 is the floor for homes and general commercial.
- CRI 90+ for retail, hospitality, and anywhere color sells the product.
- R9 (deep red) above 50 for meat, produce, cosmetics, and skin tone.
Matching CCT across an installation matters more than the absolute value. A 2700K bulb next to a 4000K bulb looks broken, not designed, and that's a return waiting for a reason.
Dimming and Flicker: The Silent Return Driver
Flicker and buzz are the top complaint on dimmed bulbs, and the root cause is almost always a mismatch between the bulb's driver and the dimmer. Most installed dimmers are leading-edge TRIAC units built for incandescent filaments, and a cheap LED driver can't read them cleanly, so it stutters at low settings.
- Only buy bulbs explicitly marked dimmable if the circuit has a dimmer.
- Check the driver's dimmer compatibility list, not just the bulb box.
- For smooth low-end dimming, pair with a trailing-edge or LED-rated dimmer.
A non-dimmable bulb on a dimmer flickers, buzzes, and dies early. That's not a defect you can fix with a replacement, it's a spec you have to fix before the order.
