Exit Signs and Emergency Lights Are Not the Same Thing
A buyer once ordered a pallet of exit signs and assumed that covered emergency lighting. It did not. An exit sign marks the way out and stays lit constantly so people can find the exit under normal power. An emergency light is a general-purpose luminaire that only switches on when the power fails, lighting the path so people can actually see where they are walking.
A compliant building needs both: exit signs to mark the route, emergency lights to illuminate it. Some combo units put both functions in one housing, which saves wall space and a circuit, but you still have to spec both functions. Know which one you are buying.
UL 924 vs UL 1598: Both, Not Either
The most common reason an emergency fixture gets rejected at inspection is a missing UL 924 listing. UL 1598 covers the luminaire's general safety; UL 924 covers the emergency function: the transfer switch, the battery charging, and the self-test behavior. An exit sign or emergency light needs both marks.

Verify the file number in UL's Product iQ database. A PDF certificate proves nothing; a live database entry proves the listing exists. This is the single highest-value check in this entire category.
The 90-Minute Rule and Why It Exists
NFPA 101 and most code bodies derived from it require 90 minutes of emergency illumination. The figure comes from the worst-case duration of a full-building evacuation. The standard also sets minimum illumination levels: roughly 10.8 lux (one foot-candle) average along the path of egress, measured at floor level, with a 40:1 maximum-to-minimum ratio so there are no dark pockets.
A battery that can only run 45 minutes fails inspection even if the fixture lights up perfectly. Runtime is not a nice-to-have; it is the whole point.
Battery Chemistry: LiFePO4 vs NiCd
LiFePO4 (lithium iron phosphate) has replaced NiCd as the standard for new emergency fixtures. It lasts longer, has no memory effect, and is not a disposal hazard the way cadmium is. If a quote comes in with NiCd at a suspiciously low price, that low price is hiding a shorter service life and a replacement battery you will be buying sooner than you think. Write the chemistry into the spec.
Self-Testing vs Manual: Match It to the Fixture Count
Self-testing units run a scheduled lamp-and-battery test and flag failures with an LED indicator, satisfying the monthly-test requirement without someone walking the building with a test key. Over roughly 50 fixtures, self-testing pays for itself in labor within a year or two, and it eliminates the most common compliance failure: the manual test that never gets done.
For a handful of fixtures, manual testing with a documented log is cheaper and still compliant. The honest question is not which is better, it is who is going to actually run the test. If nobody will, buy self-testing.
