IP65 vs IP66 vs IP67: Which Protection Rating Does Your LED Need?

Three digits — IP65, IP66, IP67 — determine whether your LED fixture survives 3 years or 10 years outdoors. The IP (Ingress Protection) rating per IEC 60529 uses two digits: the first (0-6) for solid particle protection, the second (0-9K) for liquid ingress. But many buyers look only at the bigger number, not understanding the test conditions behind it.

Here is the short version: IP65 resists water jets, IP66 resists powerful water jets, IP67 resists temporary immersion. But IP67 is not inherently better than IP66 for most outdoor lighting — immersion protection adds cost and sealing complexity without benefit for wall packs and flood lights.

      Inground / underground: IP67 (minimum) — Water pooling is inevitable, IP67 is entry-level for in-ground fixtures
      Fountain underwater: IP68 (not IP67) — Continuous submersion requires IP68, IP67 is only 30 minutes

      Decision Guide

      Three-Step IP Selection

      Step 1: Will the fixture be submerged? Inground, underwater -> IP67 minimum (IP68 for continuous submersion). Not submerged -> continue.

      Step 2: How harsh is the environment? Coastal/industrial/heavy storm/pressure-wash cleaning -> IP66. Inland city/standard facade -> IP65.

      Step 3: Consider maintenance cost. IP67 breather membranes need replacement every 6 months. If the inground fixture is under a paved surface, each maintenance event requires excavation — the labor cost can be 3-5x the fixture cost. IP65 and IP66 seal inspection is much simpler.

      Ask your supplier: Was the IP test performed by an accredited third-party lab (TUV/Intertek/SGS) or in-house? Many suppliers claim IP65 by design without certified testing. Third-party test reports are the only reliable verification.
